[PHY] Final pt. 1: Steampunk Coffee Machine, or Drinking Coffee for Science!

Assignment

It’s a final for physical computing.

Brainstorming

Together with Abby and Sammy we thought up a “Steampunk Coffee Machine”. It’s main purpose was to get that perfect ratio for a perfect cup, but now we are also thinking about motorizing different kinds of grinders and be able to rotate the coffee holder with a valve.

Observations

Our main purpose is to get the correct ratio. To test it out – we drank a lot of coffee from 7pm to 10pm.

Eventually we noticed that our preferred ratios go like this:

Abby 375ml of water to 25 grams of coffee for a ratio of 15:1.

Sammy 275ml of water to 25 grams of coffee for a ratio of 11:1.

Me, I did 150ml of water to 25 grams of coffee for a ratio of 6:1.

It’s important to note that Sammy and I prefer not to measure anything, we eyeballed our measurements.

This time we used only two methods: Chemex and Pour-Over. We noticed that in general, Chemex produces fuller bodied coffee, while Pour-Over create a thinner, but more flavorful tasting coffee.

Coarseness of the grind mattered quite a lot as well. Fine coffee made stronger tasting coffee and coarse coffee made a more acidic cup of coffee.
